‘Hypnos’ is a mythical art-house short film, serving as a re-imagining of the Greek myth of Hypnos and Thanatos, the Gods of Sleep and Death. The narrative depicts a Mortal’s journey within a labyrinthine forest, through which she is encountered and led by the deities. A stranger to the world surrounding her, her traversal of three distinct realms bring with it an inner awakening from which she will never return. Intended as an avant-garde tone poem, ‘Hypnos’ is an aesthetically driven piece utilising experimental visuals and a dark ambient soundtrack as a means of establishing a tangible mood and theme. The combination of iconography (both classical and contemporary), as well the textural elements of ‘Hypnos’ function as the designing principle to the film’s overall aesthetic, feeling, and meaning. It is the filmmakers’ hope that ‘Hypnos’ will prove resonant and experiential to the spectator.
